Tweezing

Tweezing refers to a temporary method of hair removal using an instrument known as tweezers, similar to a pair of forceps. Tweezing eyebrows involves removal of individual hair strand by pulling it out from its root and is also referred to as plucking sometimes. Although tweezing provides a short term solution for hair removal, it does not allow a thicker regrowth.

Tweezing is best applicable for pulling out unwanted hairs from eyebrows, nipples, toes including some parts of the face. However, you will need to be extremely careful while pulling out hairs from the sensitive areas of the face, nipples or the eyebrows. Before pulling out you need to select the individual hair and hold it firmly before pulling. Remember, a single hair or two can affect the shape of your brow drastically and thus be careful to choose the hair you want to remove. Moreover, once removed, the hair grows back pretty slowly and so you might want to ensure the right hair for plucking or tweezing.

Tweezing is one of the cheapest methods of temporary hair removal what with the process involving only buying of a pair of tweezers to remove the hairs. However, it is not too effective on larger areas wherein it is not possible to pull out each and every hair from its root where the growth of the hairs is much thicker. Moreover, it might also be time consuming and painful, which, if done improperly, can lead to ingrown hairs, scarring and pitting. While opting for tweezing, it is important to remember that it should never done to remove nose hairs, which might lead to painful infections. Sometimes, you may also need a mirror to remove hairs from the parts which are not clearly visible.

After using every time it is important to clean the tweezers by disinfecting the tips with alcohol. You can also maintain the sharpness of the tweezers for a long time by storing them in a tube or box. Moreover, try and avoid dropping them to prevent the tips from getting blunt and leading to their misalignment.

For performing an accurate tweezing you may follow the tips given below:

  • Brush the hair in the hair growth direction. Avoid application of creams or moisturizers which might lead the tweezers to slip and miss the strands of the hair.
  • Isolate the strand you want to tweeze.
  • Tweeze in the same direction of the hair growth. Tweezing it in the opposite direction can be very painful.
  • Gently, pull one hair at one time.

Note: To facilitate the process and open the pores of the hairs, apply a warm washcloth on the hairs to make tweezing easier.

It is essential to select a high quality pair of stainless steel tweezers to avoid irritation of the hair follicle while plucking it out. While using tweezers, make sure that the prongs of the tweezers are polished and smooth and they meet at the tips perfectly for pulling out the hair. Also, when pressed together, check whether they have a light spring. It is up to you to select the shape of the tweezers but usually a slanted point is supposed to be ideal for brows while the square varieties work well for finer hairs.
