Shaving
Shaving is one of the most common and easiest ways of getting rid of unwanted body hair. Be it extraneous public hair or unwanted facial hair shaving helps in removing and maintaining a hair free body with minimum expenditure and maximum convenience. However, the short term effect is one of the major drawbacks of shaving.
When it comes to shaving the mention of shaving razor becomes imperative. The razor helps in removing the tips of the hair shafts that have grown out of the skin surface. A variety of razors are available in the market that comes in different shapes, forms and sizes. While some razors have disposable blades needing to be replaced regularly, some are themselves disposable that are disposed after using for a specific period of time. Electric shaving razors are also very popular for making the boring (at times) job of shaving quick and convenient. However, according to the opinion of many people, these razors may not give a close and accurate shave as compared to a standard razor. Nevertheless, whichever razor you may choose to use, it is essential to ensure the quality of the device rather than looking out for cheaper products to avoid skin irritation, especially while shaving sensitive areas like the pubic region. The cleanliness of the razor and the sharpness of the blade also play a vital role in preventing blotches and redness of the skin and avoid leaving behind patches of hair in the shaven areas. Dull or blunt blades may even snap out patches of skin along with the hair which can be dangerous, leading to pain and infections.
Shaving is naturally associated with cuts and nicks and so whenever you cut yourself hold a clean tissue or a cloth on the cut to apply pressure and stop the bleeding. You may also stop shaving for a few minutes and let the bleeding stop before you resume the process. You may also think of replacing your standard razor with an electric one for a few days in case you have got a cut right in the middle of the shaving area.
It is important to soften the hairs before you start shaving in order to ensure a clean and smooth shave. Good quality shaving gels are always preferable over ordinary bath soaps. You may also wet the hairs with warm water and wait for a few minutes to soften them before applying the shaving gel. Alternatively you may take a long shower before you start shaving. However, it is not advisable to soak yourself in the water for too long as you might not want to facilitate pruning of the skin. Those with a sensitive skin need to shave in the direction of the hair. However, shaving against the direction of the hair growth can give the closest and cleanest shave. Be careful while shaving to avoid skin irritation and prevent ingrown hairs. Also, rinse the razor carefully after every two to three strokes so that it does not get clogged with the shaven hair.
Shaving reduces the natural oil of the shaven area and so it should be followed with massaging natural oil to that area. However, be careful to pick your after shave lotion or gels to avoid skin reactions. Some mentholated solutions may cause such reactions to sensitive skins.
