Laser hair removal
The process of removing unwanted body hair using the laser technology is known as Laser hair removal. This process involves the emission of a gentle beam of concentrated light on the targeted areas of the body with unwanted hair. This laser beam reaches to the hair follicles passing through the skin and transforms the generated energy to a heat destroying the hair follicles.
The process of Laser hair removal was earlier restricted to only those with light skins and dark or grey hairs. People with darker skin and hairs used to face difficulty while using this procedure. This was due to the inability of the earlier people to distinguish between the color of the hair follicle and the pigment of the skin resulting into skin burns. As it is essential for the laser device to distinguish between the two for removing hair successfully, people with darker skins and hairs often faced such consequences. Thankfully, the present YAG and the re-invented IPL, Intense Pulsed Light system has solved this problem effectively with people with darker skins yielding positive results of Laser hair removal nowadays.
The time required for a Laser hair removal treatment may vary depending on the targeted area and the density of the hair. While some areas such as chin, upper lip and underarms may need only a few minutes, larger areas like legs, back and chest may require hours. In order to get the best results an individual may need to attend several sessions the number of which is determined on the basis of the color and roughness of the hair including the skin tone of the individual.
The costs of Laser hair removal treatment are considered to be quite exorbitant which may rise up to several hundred dollars for each session. However, the cost may vary depending on the targeted area and the amount of time devoted to that area to make it hair free.
As the laser beam penetrates the skin to reach the hair follicle individuals experience different kinds of feeling. While some describe it as a feeling of a small pinch, others say it feels like a gentle snap of a rubber band. On the other hand there are people who say that it imparts a cool sensation. For those who cannot endure the discomfort, use of mild anesthetics can solve the problem. Usually, after the procedure is completed individuals may experience slight pinkness or redness on the targeted area which goes away within a short period of time. Some may also suffer from blisters, especially people with darker skins. They may also experience lightening or darkening of the skin lasting for weeks or even months. This is further associated with the risk of infection or scarring. Loss of freckles, discoloration of moles or lightening or darkening of tattoo colors are also included among the side effects.
After a series of sessions for months or even years (dependent on the individual’s hair type, target area and thickness) many have experienced permanent reduction of hair. However, those who have not experienced permanent reduction; the color of the hair has become lighter in color. It is important to remember that Laser treatment does not remove all hair permanently but helps in reducing them significantly. It is advisable to consult a physician before opting for Laser treatment.
